3M™ Speedglas™ Super Light Welding Helmet SL with Auto Darkening Filter offers lightweight comfort while helping provide professional-grade eye and face protection from debris and harmful radiation including visible light, ultra-violet radiation (UV), infra-red radiation (IR), and sparks and spatter. At approximately 13 oz. (379 grams), this 3M™ Speedglas™ SL Welding Helmet is 25 percent lighter than any other current 3M Speedglas auto-darkening welding helmet, while maintaining the performance and protection that welders worldwide have come to expect in every Speedglas product. Its reduced weight feels lighter on your head and neck, and is easily adjusted to personal settings. The headband can be adjusted in size, allowing for an excellent fit for each individual user. Easy back and forth adjustments of helmet add to the comfort. The user can also tilt the helmet to the preferred angle. The narrowest helmet in the 3M Speedglas lineup, the SL helmet is a great option for many tight.
Quick and Light, Perfect for Fast Tasks
Using specialized manufacturing techniques, 3M has reduced the overall weight of this welding helmet by greatly reducing the weight of the auto-darkening filter. The helmet is also designed to stay light. Unlike other lightweight helmets that can absorb moisture and become heavy, the Speedglas™ welding helmet SL is made from a strong, non-absorbent material. The helmet also comes with a motion sensor that automatically turns on the welding filter when the helmet is picked up.
Auto Darkening Filter Reacts Quickly After Striking an Arc
The Speedglas lens features user-selectable dark shades of shades 8 through 12, and a light shade of 3. Two arc detection sensors in the lens activate the auto-darkening filter when an arc is struck. The lens then switches from light to dark shade in approximately 0.1 milliseconds (1/10,000 of a second), giving the welder an almost instant transition from light to dark shade while maintaining an optimal view for torch placement and weld puddle control. When the weld is complete, the filter automatically returns to light shade 3 in 60-250 milliseconds, allowing quick inspection of the weld pool and preparation for the next weld.
The auto darkening filter reduces the need to flip the welding helmet up and down between torch placements, which can help increase productivity by reducing the stop-and-start time needed with passive lens welding helmets. This feature can also help reduce neck stain from “helmet nodding,” while greatly increasing the accuracy of torch placement. This, in turn, can also help reduce the need for grinding and rework, saving time, effort and money.

This helmet offers uniform shading and minimal distortion across the entire filter viewing area. By selecting the right setting for each task, you help reduce eye strain and improve the quality and production of every weld.
Versatile Eye and Face Protection for Welders
Welding helmets help protect the eyes and face in numerous ways. For starters, the helmet helps block the spatter of welding sparks and spatter produced during the welding process from reaching the eyes, face and head. Helping to protect the eyes from exceptionally bright light and rapid changes in brightness is another safety benefit of a welding helmet. Without protection, eyes can be temporarily or permanently injured by the intensity of light produced by welding. Eyes also have difficulty adjusting to rapid brightness changes while welding in dark locations, which can be both a productivity and safety issue. The helmet’s design allows for compatibility with select disposable welding respirators, including the 3M™ 8515, 8212, 8214, 8512, and 8514 Particulate Welding Respirators, to help provide respiratory protection for applications where metal fumes may be present. This durable and versatile welding helmet also meets the requirements of CSA Z94.3 and the high impact requirements of ANSI Z87.1-2010.
